Cet ouvrage a pour objectif de remettre en question la lecture hagiographique de la Révolution française défendant l'idée que la consécration de la garantie du droit de propriété fut un bénéfice pour la promotion de l'état de droit. Il est nécessaire d'inclure dans cette conception de l'histoire des idées une interprétation critique des évènements qui ont entraîné la mise en application de l'appropriation individuelle moderne. Il s'agit de mettre en perspective la situation sociale inédite dans laquelle s'est trouvé le citoyen-propriétaire au lendemain de la chute de Robespierre. Cet essai réinvestit politiquement les fondements du narratif libéral sous l'angle de la reconnaissance des causes juridiques qui ont permis la formation d'un état d'exception destinée à faire de la systématisation des situations statutaires discriminantes le moyen de préserver la domination des intérêts oligarchiques.
