Il volume contiene una trattazione generale del diritto internazionale in una prospettiva sistemica e alla luce dei problemi globali attuali. Vengono definiti anzitutto la comunità internazionale e gli attori, statali e non-statali, che la compongono, dando particolare rilievo al «sistema degli Stati», da un lato, e ai «valori comuni dell’umanità», dall’altro.
Viene quindi analizzata la divisione giuridica del mondo in spazi, e i problemi che si pongono nell’allocazione della giurisdizione tra i vari Stati, passando poi all’esame dei valori perseguiti dalle norme internazionali, in particolare quattro: ordine interstatale, persona umana, economia sostenibile, sicurezza globale.
Nell’ambito di ciascun valore vengono analizzate le principali norme internazionali esistenti. Infine il volume si occupa della responsabilità internazionale, sia dello Stato, sia delle organizzazioni internazionali, sia dell’individuo, e della giurisdizione internazionale, nonché del ruolo della diplomazia nel mantenimento della pace e dell’ordine internazionale.
