Negli interstizi della cesura del 1789 – momento di passaggio dall’Ancien régime alla Rivoluzione che con Reinhart Koselleck possiamo definire sattelzeit (soglia epocale) – si può cogliere l’affermarsi faticoso di alcuni principi e istituti giuridici che caratterizzeranno i secoli successivi: le Dichiarazioni dei diritti di stampo giusnaturalistico, le costituzioni come espressione del potere costituente, la codificazione napoleonica emblema della borghesia trionfante, così come l’espansione coloniale con il corollario della subordinazione dei popoli colonizzati a quelli europei. Nel laboratorio rivoluzionario francese, quando le potenzialità della politica moderna vengono testate per la prima volta, emergono altri protagonisti, fino a quel momento subalterni: il popolo, gli schiavi, i sudditi coloniali e le donne, soggetti storici rimasti esclusi dalle ricostruzioni dominanti che hanno reso incompleta la storia degli anni che più di altri hanno forgiato il mondo moderno. Dal giacobinismo, inteso come espressione radicale e sofisticata della politica moderna sempre in bilico tra idealismo e pragmatismo, passando per l’esperienza sanculotta, antesignana del rancore populista contro le élite corrotte, fino al bonapartismo e alle sue seduzioni plebiscitarie che avrebbe trovato nel Novecento la sua deriva totalitaria, il volume affronta grandi tematiche politiche alla luce melanconica del presente. Proprio in un momento in cui, non solo in Europa, si manifesta una sorta di asfissia democratica, tracciare una genealogia del processo di emancipazione, anche di genere e di razza, può contribuire a rilanciare il progetto incompiuto di una società di liberi e uguali che trova il suo inizio con l’età delle rivoluzioni e con la lotta per la Costituzione.
