Capacity Mechanisms in EU Energy Law examines how the existing and new sector-specific rules of European Union (EU) law address the national capacity mechanisms as instruments for ensuring generation adequacy and how the identified legal framework should be interpreted within the broader system of EU law. Many states including EU Member States have adopted capacity mechanisms which remunerate electricity producers for the availability of generation capacity and other resources to supply electricity in order to guarantee the uninterrupted availability of affordable electricity. The energy transition places new demands on how security of electricity supply is ensured. This book presents the first in-depth examination of how these so-called capacity mechanisms are addressed in EU law and how they affect the functioning of the EU energy markets.
